Serving an Intergenerational Community.

Located off Leonard’s Grant Parkway and on a plot of land that was formerly known as Hayden Farm, the new Leonardtown Library + Garvey Senior Activity Center is an integrated, state-of-the-art facility for information resources, education and senior activity. With the main design guiding principles being flexibility and adaptability, visitors of all ages now benefit from a variety of spaces in the library and senior center alike, including multipurpose meeting rooms, technology throughout, a vending cafe with a coffee shop feel, a specialty HiTech classroom near the Teen Area, dedicated children’s areas and adult areas.

The volume and character of the building is meant to express one integrated facility as a metaphor for the intergenerational vibrant community it serves and link the facility to the County’s rich history. The interior design and layout were inspired by the colors and textures of the Chesapeake Bay and the Café mural, as well as the children’s reading areas in the form of the Ark and the Dove – the two merchant ships that started the Maryland colony in 1630 – help remind visitors and teach children the unique history of Leonardtown and St. Mary’s County.
