Bringing the outside in.
Flora Singer Elementary School provides students with their own treehouse in the woods, an ideal place to foster environmental literacy. The site was planned to preserve trees and respect the steep slopes and stream valley buffers. The connection between the building and the landscape encourages students’ curiosity.
Students enter at the middle level of the 3-story building. This approach takes advantage of the site conditions, limiting the school’s footprint and connecting closely with the natural environment.
Light, bright and airy learning spaces boast natural daylighting, clerestory windows, light louvers and lighting controls to allow students and teachers to adjust the amount of sunlight entering their learning zones. The media center is the heart of the school, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the surrounding forest. Wireless computer access, interactive whiteboard systems and flexible furniture allow for the successful incorporation of many learning styles.
Community engagement during the design process included tree surveys to refine the placement of trails. G+P engaged the Audubon Naturalist Society to create educational signage throughout both the building and the site. G+P has stayed actively involved with the staff, teachers and students after move-in. We hosted a Green Apple Day of Service at the school to teach students about the environmental features incorporated within the facility, and we presented at the Science Fair to educate and train students and teachers.
