A shared vision.

The revitalized Brooklyn Park Middle School and Chesapeake Arts Center serve as an all-encompassing space for the community. Through a feasibility study process, G+P developed a vision for a building shared by the school and the arts center, an organization that promotes the arts in the Anne Arundel County community. The connection between these programs is a natural one—each seeks to educate the community and provide much needed resources to the surrounding neighborhoods.

Brooklyn Park’s portion of the building features 20 classrooms and support spaces, which include art, music, media, science, computer labs, storage, cafeteria, gymnasium, family consumer center, technology education, guidance and pupil services. The former school also incorporated extensive glass throughout the building, so this transparency was maintained to enhance daylighting. The design opens up the media center, providing a more seamless connection to the school’s internal circulation.

The Chesapeake Arts Center, which partners with local artists, businesses and organizations, provides classes and seminars to the community, enhancing the connection beyond the traditional educational opportunities that the school affords. Visiting artists and abundant display opportunities make the Chesapeake Arts Center a true cultural destination in the County.
