Matapeake Elementary School celebrates its unique ecological location on Kent Island in the Chesapeake Bay of Maryland. The character of the building’s nautical vocabulary is appropriate to the cultural context of Kent Island which creates a sense of place with regional identity which reinforces social belonging.

The building plan is organized around a linear, naturally lit promenade and central, exterior, environmental courtyard. Classrooms are clustered in groups of 4 around a commons area. The spaces weave together and create "outdoor rooms" for learning that become integral parts of the interior environment.
