Education amidst agriculture.
Located in Carroll County, rich with rural heritage, Ebb Valley Elementary School provides a 21st Century learning model that resonates with the agricultural architecture of the area. Following the rolling hills of the land, the building’s individual volumes, which define separate classroom clusters and the cafeteria and gymnasium, have gabled roof massing, rusticated masonry and red metal siding, following the tradition of the surrounding barn buildings. The building’s specific placement on the site allows for a graded and landscaped hill behind the gym that is used as an outdoor amphitheater for education and performances.
Even in an area with abundant open space, the design nevertheless minimizes the building footprint and site disruption to maximize the open green area, keeping an adjacent pond and respecting undeveloped land present on the site. The site is landscaped with native plantings and does not require an irrigation system, making the building feel as though it has always been there. The school’s outdoor amphitheater allows for additional learning space amongst the natural surroundings.
Inside, the academic clusters are separated from the public areas. In all spaces, daylight and views to the surrounding landscape are maximized. The state-of-the-art classroom cluster concept allows the young students to feel at home in their own spaces, even amidst the vast landscape beyond.
